ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Catholic bishops on Friday condemned the destruction of human embryos for stem cell research as a “gravely immoral act” in the organization’s first formal statement on the issue.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops issued a document Friday warning against what they consider the moral dangers of embryonic stem cell research, saying it treats human beings as commodities and reduces procreation to a manufacturing process.

WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 11, 2008 .- U.S. bishops may publish their first formal statement on embryonic stem cell research.

Researchers studying embryonic stem cells have explored the first fork in the developmental road, getting a new look at what happens when fertilized eggs differentiate to build either an embryo or a placenta.
